Popcorn Time - Status as of 19th April 2022

    19th April 2022

Popcorn Time server has been down again since February 2022. It looks like, the old server will not be coming back online again now.

I have tried different server with some changes and that seems to be working fine since last 6 weeks or so now. I guess, if you want a working version of Popcorn Time, this will be the option. This needs a complete re-install of the Popcorn Time Application. Unfortunately, it not possible to do this remotely and that means the options will be either bring your Apple TV to me in person or send through post with Return Paid Envelope.

If this is the time for renewal of Pocorn Time/Kodi for your Apple TV, I will do this as renewal cost for $30 and reinstall all. Or if you just just did renewal, and now only required this Popcorn Time reinstall, it will be extra $20.

I did mention aboue the paid Premium Kodi option earlier. I have been using it for last year of so and it works very well. This is different to the Popcorn Time as the Kodi addons works through multiple server links globally and the reliability of them up and running is far greater than Popcorn Time. Popcorn Time has got a very good UI and seems easy to use while it is working and there is no doubt about it. However, since last year or so, it has been going through lot of issues and reliability has been decreased greatly.

This Kodi option comes in handy for this. It's $40 for six months to use this Premium option. If not required, it can be easily discontinued in six months when the Popcorn Time becomes stable again. I can try to help with this option remotely for the time being with some limitations on the addons. If I can work on your Apple TV here locally, it can offer a lot better experience but if you cannot bring it to me or post it to me, I can try to help remotely. It works well with the new Kodi v19 but can be used on Kodi v17 as well. You might have the old Kodi installed on Apple TV as this new Kodi has only been released in last few months. On next renewal, I will update to v19 anyway. If you are interested in these options, you can contact me through email or mobile.

Please note that, I am not trying to sell any of these options to you. Sharing only what I know and possible right now.

      Thank you and Regards.

Popcorn Time - Status as of 10th August 2021

    10th August 2021

Popcorn Time server was down again since 28th July 2021. The older server is working again with the changes in the settings file for raw popcorn time app. The only way, it will work at your end is to get the Popcorn time reinstalled. If local in Sydney, you can bring it to me and I can do it in few minutes or send with return envelope and I can reinstall and send back. I will not charge for this for this time if you have just recently got this updated in last four months. Popcorn Time is going through bad time and I will keep on exploring options in case something like this happens again. There is no way, I can guarantee for the server's up and working at all times, once installed. It is maintained anonymously or by team on the other side of the world and goes through lot of possible hackers/blockers/government issues in between and I try to keep up with the changes on the server block, down times, alternate servers and help as much as possible. Even then, things like this happens and we have to just wait and watch.

On a different note, what I have recently found and tried is the Premium-Paid version through Kodi for video add-ons. I have been using it for last two months and it works very well. It's $40 for six months to use this Premium option but to me personally, I found it totally worthwhile. I am not saying that you have to do this, but it's only an option that can be explored. If you are interested in this option, you can contact me through email or mobile.

With Kodi, you can also try the addons that still offers free links. I have noticed that lot of the free links are not working or slow at most times and makes it hard to use Kodi properly. I have checked the addon called Maverick that still offers lot of free links to stream and can be used if you want to try. You can install the addons yourself as long as the Kodi App is already there on your Apple TV.

Please note that, I am not trying to sell any of these options to you or trying to get benefit of the situation. Sharing only what I know and possible right now.

      Thank you and Regards.

Popcorn Time - Status as on 28th July 2021

    28th July 2021

Popcorn Time server has been down again since this morning. We just have to wait for it to be up and running again. There is nothing I can do about it other than waiting. If at all, it doesn't come online again, I will be looking at the other server option in the background. If I can find the solution, I can help with installing the new version to your Apple TV but that means I will need the Apple TV here again. There are two versions available right now with two different servers. One is down as you know and other one is still working fine. I have just tried it and works well. I have installed the two versions on some of the Apple TVs recently and in that case, you can try the other version. If you have both versions down, means, they are not the recent ones and needs new install. Popcorn Time is going through bad time and I will keep on exploring options in case something like this happens. Why my Popcorn Time is not working or not updating any New Movies?

    26th February 2021

As many of you might have already noticed, Popcorn Time old version was not updating the new movies for last few solid months. And it was very frustrating for everyone and me as well! Finally, after lot of sleepless nights and hectic weekends, updated the Popcorn Time code (with the help of lot of other people involved in this project) and the updated version of this new Popcorn Time updates the New Movies perfectly. The Search issue is also handled well and added two dummy search results all times to allow the selection possible with Remote.

If you are planning to update your Apple TV to latest tvOS 14 or if it is already updated to tvOS 14, the new Popcorn Time version needs to be installed. The old version will not work.

Also, the version of Popcorn Time you would have on your Apple TV, would most probably the old version and would not be updating the movies. If you want to get the updates on the movies, you will need to get the new Popcorn Time version installed.

Installation of this version is very tricky for now. It is just not possible to do Remote Install at this time. You can bring your Apple TV to me and I can install the new version, or you can post it to me for the update with Return Envelope or with postage money. The re-install of this new version cost is $15. If you want to reinstall all apps including Kodi with Addons, it will be $30. The price is bit higher than last time as, this time the process is complicated on installation.

Having said that, if you have renewed your Subscrption or paid for re-install in last month or so (Feb '21), I am happy to do this for "Free" for you, although I stil have to spend the same time again to do this. Please note that, the cost is only for the time that I have to spend again to do the process and for the time already spent on fixing this and for registering the Apple TV again on Developer account. Hope that makes sense!

      Thank you and Regards.

Popcorn Time with Latest Apple TV Update (tvOS14)

    26th September 2020

Popcorn Time and Apple tvOS 14 Apple has released the latest tvOS 14 for Apple TVs. The earlier version of Popcorn Time was not compatible with this latest version of tvOS. The new version has been released and is working perfectly fine with the Latest Apple TV software.

So, if you are planning to update your Apple TV to latest tvOS 14 or if it is already updated to tvOS 14, the new Popconr Time version needs to be installed. The old version will not work.

I can do that either remotely if you have a MaxBook computer or you can bring your Apple TV to me and I can install the new version. You can also post it to me for the update with Return Envelope or with postage money. The re-install of new version cost is $10.If you want to reinstall all apps including Kodi with Addons, it will be $30. Please note that, with remote install, I can re-install kodi but I can't install addons on Kodi.

      Thank you and Regards.

Update Apple TV to tvOS 14, Yes Or No?

    20th September 2020

Popcorn Time and Apple tvOS 14 Compatibility? Apple has released the latest tvOS 14 for Apple TVs. The current version of Popcorn Time is not compatible with this latest version of tvOS and please try to avoid the update of Apple TV if you want to continue using the Popcorn Time.

There is no current ETA for the new Update for Popcorn Time that works with the new tvOS 14. So, it is better to leave the Apple TV at the current tvOS and not to update.

To Stop the Auto Update, please follow as explained here. Go to Settings in Apple TV, then select "System" then "Software Updates" and tuen off the "Automatic Update" Option.

If the Apple TV is accidently updated to tvos 14, you just have to wait till the new Popcorn Time version comes around that is compatible. There is nothing currently available to fix that issue. On tvos 14, the Popcorn Time will open and will show the movies posters, but on selecting the movie, it will crash the app.

I will post the news when the new compatible Popcorn Time version is available and then the Apple TVs can be updated. However, it will require to reinstall the Popcorn Time again. This is not an option at this point of time anyway. Until new version is available, please stay on current version and do not update the Apple TV

Kodi is working fine with new tvOS 14 and if you have updated your Apple TV, that will be handy to use until the fix on Popcorn Time. If you are experiencing any issues with your Kodi setup, please feel free to contact me.

      Thank you and Regards.

What is the Status of Popcorn Time?

    2nd June 2020

Popcorn Time Workaround App has been working fine since the Original Popcorn Time went down. Original Popcorn Time app is not connecting to the servers and it may remain in that state. It is more than month and a half since the original app has stopped and the new workaround app has been working fine.

I would say, this new Popcorn Time app has become the main Popcorn Time app. This app requires to be installed as "Fresh Install" and needs the device to be registered on Developer Site with Apple again.

I can install this new Popcorn Time for you, however, please note that, I will not be able to do it for free. I can do it for $30 for the time I have to invest and registration.

I can also install it "Remotely", Only and Only if you have a MacBook and got the "XCODE" installed. Also, I need access to TeamViewer to connect to your MacBook for remote install. Or else, you can visit personally/send your device to me and I can install and send it back.

Also, please note that, the popcorn time app and workaround is not maintained by me and for any such incidents, we just have to wait or try to find another workaround. Hope you all will understand.

Kodi has been working fine all time and can be used as an alternative if anything like this happens with Popcorn Time app. If you are experiencing any issues with your Kodi setup, please feel free to contact me.

      Thank you and Regards.

Is it Possible to use VPN on Apple TV?

    2nd June 2020
Well the answer is Yes and No. Why???

Unfortunately, Apple TV does not support VPN software apps directly, but you can install the VPN on the Wi-fi router that the Apple TV is connected to or you can use manual DNS Server numbers to connect through VPN. So, the answer is Yes and No.

If you decide to use VPN on your Apple TV, I strogly suggest, please get a Trial for whichever VPN Provider you choose and use it on your Apple TV. Experience the difference and if it is actually working, if not, try another provider or leave it.

VPN Service is not cheap and before committing to yearly or long-term plans, please make sure that it is what you want, and it is working as you expect.

Do I need VPN for Popcorn Time and Kodi?

    2nd June 2020
VPN for Popcorn Time & Kodi Lot of people do ask me; Do I need VPN to use Popcorn Time and Kodi???

Well, the answer is NO. You do not need VPN to use Popcorn Time or Kodi on your Apple TV. Popcorn Time and Kodi both have streams and seeds available with or without VPN.

If you want some more content on Netflix or if you want subtitles on Popcorn Time, or you want to see more streams on Kodi, VPN may help. Popcorn Time uses the opensubtitle.org website to fetch the subtitles for the movies. This website is not accessible in Australia and hence Popcorn Time does not show any subtitles for movies/tv shows. With VPN, you can get the subtitles on Popcorn Time by connecting to US DNS Servers.

In short, it is your personal choice if you want to use VPN or not but it is definitely not the requisite for Popcorn Time or Kodi. Getting more content or subtitles on movies, are different reasons that you may use VPN.

How Do I setup VPN on my Apple TV?

    2nd June 2020

VPN ON APPLE TV - This can be done by configuring the DNS servers on your Apple TV or getting a modified firmware on your Router where Apple TV connects. Router settings are different from product to product and model to model and I will not cover detail here.

To setup DNS Sever numbers on Apple TV, please follow below steps.
    1. On your Apple TV, open Settings.
    2. In Settings, select Network.
    3. In the Network menu, select your current active connection. (In this case, it’s a Wi-Fi connection.)
    4. In the Wi-Fi menu, select your Wi-Fi network to access its settings.
    5. In the connection’s settings menu, scroll down and select Configure DNS.
    6. In the Configure DNS options, select Manual.
    7. You will arrive at the manual DNS input screen.

Note: Please make a note of your current DNS settings if you have manually configured it before. If you did not, you can set Configure DNS to Automatic again to revert to your original one.

    8. Enter the numbers of your VPN provider DNS IP address, which you can obtain from them and for the country where you want to connect.

    9. You MUST restart your Apple TV for the DNS change to take place. To restart your Apple TV, return to the Settings menu. From the Settings menu, select System. From the System menu, select Restart.

Why my Popcorn Time is not showing movies/tv shows?

    4th June 2020
Popcorn Time is stuck or frozen?

It can happen, if you have not closed the app properly and kept it open in background all times. Normally, when you click on "Menu" button on your Apple TV Remote, it will send the running app in background. This will not necessarily close the application but just switch it in background. In this case, the app like Popcorn Time will keep collecting large amount of raw data from seeds and may stuck or freeze.

To close the app permanently and reopen, just double click the button next to "Menu" button on Remote. It is a round button with a TV symbol on it. This will bring up all the apps that are running in background. You can swipe them up one by one to close them. This way, they will be closed permanently. You can then reopen them, and it should make a fresh start for the app. This should generally solve the problem of stuck or frozen Popcorn time.

Popcorn Time takes a long time to load or I have to click several time to open Popcorn Time?

    4th June 2020
Popcorn Time - Takes long time to open

It can happen, if you have lot of movies/tv shows downloaded and stored in Popcorn Time app. Delete few of them to restore the space and the app will work smooth. Just to give you an idea, with 3 to 4 movies in Popcorn Time app in downloaded form, will make the app size of 5GB or even bigger. The bigger the size of the app, it will take long time to load and may crash as well. Not Ideal. So, please download the movie if you must, watch it and delete to keep the app light weight.

You can also try to clear the "cache" from Popcorn Time app and that helps a well. While streaming movies, the popcorn time stores some raw data on hard drive and sometimes it remains even after the app is closed. To clear this, go to "Settings" on Popcorn Time. Select the second last option "Clear Cache" to clear the raw data. This will help the app to load faster and smoother.

Popcorn Time does not show subtitles for movies/tv shows? Not many links on Kodi?

    4th June 2020
    No subtitles on Popcorn Time!

Popcorn Time uses the opensubtitle.org website to fetch the subtitles for the movies. This website is not accessible in Australia and hence Popcorn Time does not show any subtitles for movies/tv shows. If you want some subtitles on Popcorn Time, or you want to see more streams/links on Kodi, VPN may help. With VPN, you can get the subtitles on Popcorn Time by connecting to US DNS Servers.

Can I stream or install apps like Hulu, DirectTv, SlingTv on my Apple TV?

    9th June 2020

Well, short answer is NO. These apps are only available for US Market as of today and can not be installed or accessed through Australia App Store or Australian Internet connection.

Having said that, you can try with VPN if you can get access to them. It is not easy or straight forward though. VPN on Apple TV only has limited functionality at this stage and does not provide full options as a dedicated VPN app on Comptuer or Macbook.

If you can try to install VPN on your router directly, by using a tweaked firmware or something, that might help but I have not that tried or tested that option.

      Thank you and Regards.
